The Shallows – review

shallows

A girl goes out surfing on her own on a remote Mexican beach, gets attacked by a shark and stuck on a rock, how to ruin your holiday huh? The is some backstory to do with a deceased mother and dropping out of med school, but all you need to know out of that is that she can stitch up her own wounds.

Shark movies will never be as good as Jaws, lets face it, the Shark that started it all but The Shallows is no Sharknado, Snow Shark or Springbreak Shark Attack either.

The film is pretty much Blake Lively sat on a rock and surprisingly gets a fair amount of tension out of it (not to mention gratuitous boob shots) obviously Lively took some advice from husband Ryan Reynolds, ‘if you want people to noticed your acting instead of your pretty face make sure you are the only actor in the movie, okay’ He did it with Buried and it worked for him, so maybe it will work for her too.

The movie and Lively herself work well, the tension grows, but as is often the downfall of movies like this is that the situation get more and more ridiculous for our entertainment value and it stretches the realism.

Full props also go to the second actor with the most screen time, the seagull; personality, character, charm that bird really knows how to keep an audience happy.

The Shallows is watchable, but just don’t spend too much money on it.
