The Dressmaker – review

dressmaker

Kate Winslet plays Tilly Dunage, the dressmaker, she has gone back to her podunk town in the middle of the outback, to get revenge on everyone that wronged her as a child before sending her away forever (as she might have murdered someone but nobody can quite remember).

The Dressmaker is one of those sunday afternoon movies but it is also one of those off kilter Australian films. It starts off quite well, playing like a bit of a random western, but set in 1950s Australia. It then gets very silly, everyone in the dusty little town starts wearing evening gowns to do the housework in. But it shifts is tone a couple of times and it ends in quite a different place to wear it starts, not really lightweight fun any more.

The romance between Kate Winslet and Liam Hemsworth makes me feel uncomfortable. And it isn’t just the age difference or the fact that Winslet could eat him for breakfast. The boy is a terrible actor and the only thing he has to do in this movie is be Australian. That’s it.

Despite Kate Winslets best efforts, The Dressmaker ends up with too many plates spinning and they all end up crashing down.
