Avengers: Age Of Ultron – review

The Marvel superhero team is back and this time the big bad hell bent of the destruction of the world is a robot who is a right psycho.

The Avengers sequel is very entertaining. There is no denying it. Much like the original movie three years ago, it has to juggle a massive cast of characters (more so this time round), inventive action scenes, humour and suspense.  So you know something has to give and that something is both plot and continuity. But as long as you turn the dial on your brain down to 6 you’ll have a great time. The plot problems are that Age Of Ultron is another ‘catch the pigeon’, the crew finding one reason or another to chase Ultron from one city to the next. Continuity is a problem because it does not appear to follow on all that much from The Winter Solider, Iron Man 3 etc. You know I haven’t watched these movies on a loop, so I can’t remember where Lokis sceptre was last. A ‘previously on’ would have been nice you know. Continuity is also an issue the other way with some scenes included to purely to set up Civil War, Infinity War and Thor Ragnarok.

Now the good stuff, the characters, everyone of the main cast gets their moment of a) awesome fight scene b) dramatic moment c) one liner.  Director Joss Whedon does such a good job of making all the Avengers have different motivations, personality and the audience never getting lost with whose who. The humour is very recognisable as Joss Whedon. Even characters who have struggled with their solo movies (Thor I’m looking at you, do not suffer from being boring this time round but has a better use of their power set, good dialogue and a connection with the audience). Such a connection that I have been talking about the characters like they are real people for days. I wasn’t buying the Brutasha love at all, it felt like ick.

Of the new characters The Vision is the best the bunch. The posters not actually doing justice to the character design. A number of Vision moments being my favourite of the movie, cape, hammer and born yesterday for example.

Avengers Age Of Ultron is a lot of fun.  While far from perfect the pros well outweigh the cons. The end team fight scene was like a comic book double page spread made real, and it was glorious.
